Braces then Invisalign Now!

When I think about the 80’s there is 4 things I remember most.

  1.   The music
  2. The style
  3.   The movies
  4. Braces

I was born in 1971 so yes, I was a teen in the 80’s.

I wanted to dress like Madonna, in which I wasn’t allowed.  Of course I would push it as far as I could.  I would wear blue jeans with socks pulled up over the legs and black pumps.  I also would try and sneak in 2 different earrings or just one big one in which my mom always made me change.

I listened to my thriller album (yes on vinyl)

everyday after school.  I also had  Michael Jackson postered all over my bedroom wall, sunglasses with his picture on the glass.  I loved the movies and watched them over and over.  Boy George was also huge back then.  While I didn’t have any of his music I loved the fact that the bus driver would let us listen to him on one of the students “boom boxes” they brought to school with them!

Movies like:

Girls Just want to have fun,  The sure thing and pretty in pink was on the top of my list.  I  would go to the video store and search the VHS tapes for anything with John Cussack  or Robert Downey Jr.  They were young then and I was in love haha.  My favorite show in the whole wide world was Growing pains and I couldn’t wait for it to come on and see what was going on with Kirk Cameron and Tracey Gold aka Mike and Carol.

One thing I didn’t personally experience myself

was braces.  But I did take the silver wrapper from my chewing gum and put across my teeth, and then smiled at people.  Why?  Because I was strange and because I could.  There were several people in my school that experienced them and they were not discreet at all.  I am sure they would’ve loved to have took them in and out like I did my chewing gum wrapper, but that just wasn’t an option.

Now

sitting here today I think about how the top 4 things that I remember about the 80’s has changed or I should say “evolved”.  Kids are still into all 4 things, just as much or more then I was at that time.

What got me thinking about all this?

A week or so ago I was invited to a “80s” themed party through SITS and Invisalign.   There was about 10 bloggers there all together, some of us dressed 80 style, the good feel good music playing and lots of discussion on “then and now”.

There was

also a couple of awesome DMD, M.s.  That came and answered all our questions about this new thing called “Invisalign”.  I was really amazed.  I had recently been to a breakfast sponsored by Invisalign and was amazed then as well but these guys really gave us a look into what Invisalign really is!

Did You Know that Justin Bieber wears Invisalign?

Adults and teens now have a modern choice for Straightening their teeth!  No more wires and brackets required-  Invisalign is the clear alternative to metal braces that use a series of virtually invisible and removable liners that gradually move teeth over time.  The benefits include no food restrictions, the ability to easilly maintain healthy dental brushing habits, minimal interference with sports or other activities, and teeth get straightened out without most other people knowing you are in treatment.  Visit invisalign website for more information about the clear alternative to braces.

Now that you know what they are here is what I learned about them for teens:
  • I learned that Invisalign for teens are just as effective as traditional braces!  When worn according to your doctors recommendations they are just as effective
  • There is a compliance indicator on the invisalign that determines just how long your teen will need to wear them.  It is a little blue dye (you can see in the picture, but as the teen wears them the dye will fade and that is how it is determined how long they will have to be worn.  IF you look in this picture you will see the blue dot.  That is the dye or compliance indicator:

Please remember Invisalign can also work on your Pre- teen!  seriously!

  • dye

  • These compliance indicators will also tell you if your teen has been wearing the invisialign as he/she is supposed too!
  • I think a lot of people were concerned about the “what if” my child loses these.  You will need to get the “teen” to the dentist A.s.a.p when this happens and he may be able to go ahead and start him on the next set of aligners.

Another concern was the cost.  As the DMD explained that night if you think about all the dentist visits you have to go to with traditional braces compared to the visits with Invisalign, you are actually saving money in the long run.  It really makes sense when you think about it right?  The office calls is crazy sometimes.
